Starfield save crashing? Try this fix.

So my last few Starfield saves are crashing continually a few minutes after loading in. I’m playing on PC but this might work for Xbox also.

If you’re having the same issue, try these steps:

  • Do not delete your current ‘main’ save game
  • Load up a previous/old save if you have one, make sure it’s stable and not crashing
  • While playing that old save, go to your menu and ‘Save’ manually. Creating a new save (we won’t be using this but it’s important to do this)
  • Now, Load back to your ‘main’ save file
  • You should be crash-free for a while at least

Repeat this process if the save starts crashing again. Other users online have suggested turning off ‘Auto-save’.

Let me know in the comments if this worked for you.

It doesn’t seem like anyone has commented….I’m surprised.
Anyways, I have used this trick many times and it works (on xbox series x) – for a while at least. Thank you for posting this, I really appreciate it.

Thank you for posting this. It’s helpful.

Do you think an issue might be the sheer amount of information contained in a save file if one has been playing for an extended amount of time in one New Game + playthrough, without going through the Unity? I wonder if, eventually, the game gets overwhelmed with the amount of stuff (items, surveyed planet data, missions completed, etc.) that it needs to account for and catalogue the longer someone plays a single NG+ playthrough. Just a thought.

Hey James, you’re welcome and I’m glad it was useful. Interesting theory, it’s definitely possible that save file bloat could be an issue. I think it was an issue on older Bethesda titles if I remember correctly.
